Labor Day Weekend in Los Angeles: Things to Do Beyond Hollywood

Los Angeles is bigger than its beaches, movie studios, and Hollywood Boulevard. Labor Day weekend is a chance to experience the neighborhoods, art, food, and stories that give the city its real character.

Here is a local-first plan for September 4–7, 2026, with a special focus on Black Los Angeles and South L.A. Event details can change, so check each official website before heading out.

Start Friday with art and live jazz

Begin the weekend at the California African American Museum in Exposition Park. CAAM is free and features exhibitions centered on African American art, history, and culture. “The Sound of Gordon Parks” is scheduled through September 13, giving Labor Day visitors one of their final chances to experience the exhibition.

Afterward, Jazz at LACMA is scheduled for Friday evenings from 6–9 p.m. through September 25 at the Smidt Welcome Plaza. It is an easy way to turn a museum afternoon into an evening of live music.

Make Saturday a Crenshaw and Leimert Park day

The City of Los Angeles lists the Crenshaw Farmers’ Market for Saturdays from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. at 5730 Crenshaw Boulevard. Shop from local vendors, grab something to eat, and spend your dollars in the community.

Then continue to Leimert Park Village, widely regarded as the cultural heart of Black Los Angeles. Walk Degnan Boulevard, visit neighborhood shops, look for public art, and spend time in Leimert Plaza Park. The area’s cultural anchors include Art + Practice, LORE, KAOS Network, the Vision Theatre, and The World Stage.

This is the Los Angeles many visitors miss: jazz, poetry, visual art, independent businesses, and generations of community history within a few blocks.

Spend Sunday where the community gathers

Leimert Plaza Park’s drum circle takes place on Sundays, while the Leimert Park Art Walk is held monthly. Even on Sundays when the Art Walk is not scheduled, it is a good idea to slow down, explore the village, and connect with the neighborhood respectfully.

Before visiting any business or cultural venue, check its current hours. Holiday weekends can bring schedule changes.

Add an iconic Los Angeles evening

For a classic L.A. night, the Hollywood Bowl is hosting “Maestro of the Movies: A Tribute to John Williams” from September 4–6. The Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform selections from well-known film scores under conductor David Newman. Tickets are required.

If you prefer a flexible plan that does not require tickets, explore the murals and neighborhood landmarks along the Crenshaw corridor, enjoy a local restaurant, and watch the city change as the sun goes down.

A local tip for getting around

Labor Day traffic can be heavy. Metro’s K Line serves Leimert Park and other communities along the Crenshaw corridor. For Exposition Park, check current Metro routing and allow extra time—USC football on Friday evening may affect traffic and parking near the museums.
